Learning Objectives:

  • List the primary reasons for changing EHR systems and describe the major challenges faced by agencies when transitioning to a new EHR and plan for facing each of these challenges
  • Conduct an EHR Needs Assessment using a comprehensive functional needs assessment tool
  • Create an action plan for transitioning to a new EHR that addresses the major challenges

Why Behavioral Healthcare Needs Specialized EHR Systems

Thursday, March 30th, 2017

We are frequently asked by behavioral healthcare (BH) organizations, “why can’t we just use the local Hospital’s EHR system?”  In some cases, the BH agency is owned by or part of a hospital system that has already implemented its own Medical EHR.  In other cases the BH and Medical offices are working together as an ACO.  Understandably, there is pressure on BH C-Suite staff to utilize an existing EHR on the medical side.  So why not use a medical EHR system? This question is a lot like asking, “Why can’t we just mow the lawn with our snow blower?”  The answer, simply, is that you need the right tool for the job.

EHR Project Management Tools

Sunday, December 11th, 2011

As an independent consultant, I do a lot of project management. Highly organized by nature, I am always looking for computer tools that can make managing the project easier and more organized. I also do a lot of work remotely at client sites and there are some free or very inexpensive programs that can enhance your project management. I have pulled together a listing of my favorite tools to share with you as you prepare to implement your new electronic health record system. Any project, big or small, can be helped or improved with good organization and easy access to your data. The tools can be broken down into three main categories; collaboration, on-site and project support.

Little has been written about Electronic Health Record (EHR) implementations in behavioral healthcare agencies. EHR systems are one of the most expensive purchases and high impact projects in which a BH provider will engage.  This white paper will explore several best practices for implementation.
